The T34 revolutionized tank design and played a key role in Russias WWII survival and eventual victory. An incredible total of 53,552 were built. A masterly design by Mikhail Koshkin and his Kharkov production team, it had excellent sloped armor, a capable 76.2mm gun, and a reliable 12 cylinder, 500hp diesel engine a powerweight ratio of 19 hp per ton. Weighing 35.3 tons, it had a road speed of 31mph and a range of 186 miles. Its loyal five man crew was well protected in a tank that was capable and simple to maintain or repair in the field. The T34 was first produced in January 1940. By 22 June 1941, when the German Army attacked in Operation Barbarossa, Russia fortunately fielded 1,225 T34s. Its combat debut was a rude shock to the Germans, who learned to treat the T34 with respect. No other Russian weapon better characterized the stubborn defense and eventual victory on the Eastern front. The T34 was the near perfect balance of firepower, protection and mobility.
