The Coyote (Canis latrans, which means "barking dog") is native to North America
and is found from Alaska to Canada to the U.S. and as far south as Panama.
The word "coyote" was borrowed from Mexican Spanish, which itself borrowed the term
from the Aztec word "coyotel". They assemble in small packs but naturally hunt alone.
Despite being extensively hunted, the coyote is one of the few animals that has enlarged
its range since human encroachment began. Coyotes have moved into most of the areas
of North America formerly occupied by wolves. On average they weigh about 50 pounds and can
be identified by their lean frame, pointed snout and ears, thick bushy tail and extremely
agile movement. They are highly adaptable and thrive in a variety of environments.
Coyotes are preyed upon by cougars, wolves, bears and man. The calls of a coyote are
characterized by high-pitched barks, howls, yips, and yelps. These calls are most often heard at dusk or nighttime.
The coyote is quite a character in the mythology of most Native American peoples. To the Navajo,
it is known as God's dog while in other folk tales, he is usually portrayed as a trickster or a cultural hero.
It is a highly resilient varmint, despite over 900,000 coyotes being killed in 1991 alone.
But your AR500 Coyote will come close to having almost as many lives!
